1. What you need to know about Lao visas if you want to travel by land from Vietnam to Laos:
Some countries are exempt from Lao visa requirements upon entry into Laos.
- If traveling by land to Laos, E-visas (online application) are not accepted at Vietnam-Laos land border crossings.
- Visa on arrival: Currently, only the Lao Bao border crossing (Vietnam) or Densavan border crossing (Savannakhet province, Laos) issue Laos visa on arrival. Some countries are not allowed to apply and must apply for a visa at the embassy beforehand.
- By land: Besides the Lao Bao/Densavan border crossing, if you want to travel by land from Vietnam to Laos, you need to apply for a visa at the Lao embassy or consulate (in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang). The visa application process takes approximately 1/2 to 1 working day. Bring 2 photos (4x6 cm) with a white background and 40 USD for the Lao visa fee.
2. Do I need a Lao visa to travel from Da Nang to Pakse?
- Traveling from Da Nang to Pakse (without changing vehicles) usually involves a minivan that passes through the Bo Y or Lalay border crossing. Except for citizens who are exempt from visa requirements, citizens of other countries must apply for a visa at the Lao embassy in Hanoi or the consulate in Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City (1 working day).
- If you don't have time to apply for a Lao visa, you can choose a sleeper bus from Da Nang through the Lao Bao border crossing to Xeno. From Xeno, there are many sleeper buses to Pakse. You can apply for a Lao visa (Visa on Arrival) at the Lao Bao border crossing.
