B. How to get to Thakhek from Hanoi

Currently, there are not regular bus routes running directly from Hanoi to Thakhek, so we will advise you on another way to get to Thakhek.

Method 1: HANOI TO LAO BAO BORDER GATE - THAKHEK

From Hanoi, take the sleeper bus at 5:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. to Lao Bao border gate at 7:30 a.m. the next day. Go through immigration procedures into Laos, then wait at the border gate where many other buses from different provinces of Vietnam will pass through the border gate to go to Thakhek, Savannakhek, Vientiane, you will easily catch the bus. Travel time from Lao Bao border gate to Thakhek is about 6 hours with a distance of about 350km

TICKET PRICE FROM HANOI – LAO BAO BORDER GATE = 600,000 VND

Note: Most countries can apply for a Lao visa at Lao Bao border gate (Visa On Arrival), but some countries from Africa are required to apply for a Lao visa at the embassy before departure.

Method 2: HA NOI - CAU TREO BORDER GATE - VIENG KHAM - THAKHEK

From Hanoi, take the bus route from Hanoi - Cau Treo border gate - Vieng Kham - Vientiane. The bus departs from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Guests get off the bus at Vieng Kham at 12:30 - 13:00 on day 2. Here you also wait for buses departing from Vientiane through Vieng Kham to Thakhek. About 100km from Vieng Kham to Thakhek with a car travel time of about 3 hours.

Note: Cau Treo border gate does not issue Lao visa on arrival (Visa On Arrival) or Lao evisa is also not accepted. To apply for a Laos visa, you must go to the Laos embassy in Hanoi to apply for a visa. It's also very easy. In the morning, bring your passport + 2 photos to the Lao embassy + fill in the declaration and submit it to them. Around 3pm you will receive your Laos Visa + pay the visa fee of about 50 USD.

C. Pick-up and departure schedule from Hanoi, Vietnam to Thakhek, Laos

1. Pick up at hotels/motels in Hanoi Old Quarter area from 3.00pm - 3.20pm. Pick up at Laos embassy at 3.30pm. (We pick you up early to avoid traffic jams that affect your schedule)
2. Mr. Hung who pick you up – We will provide a photo of Mr. Hung so you can easily recognize him.
He will arrange a mini bus/taxi to take you to Nuoc Ngam bus station. (About 5-7km).
At the bus station, the staff will give you tickets to check in and board the bus.
3. Bus departure time: 5.45pm - 6.00pm day 1

C. Fees at the border?

You need to pay attention to the mandatory fees at the border gate to avoid wasting a lot of time: Exiting Vietnam, you will have to pay a fee of about 1 USD + Entering Laos, you will also have to pay a fee of 1 USD. The total amount you need is at least 2 USD = 50,000 Kip / VND
